When you are traveling or preparing to travel abroad, it is always best to have the correct foreign currency in advance. There are several locations that offer this service; they can give you the foreign currency of your choice at the going rate of exchange.

If you prefer to wait until you reach your destination to exchange your currency, you can usually find a currency exchange location at the airport or use an ATM machine to request money in the local currency. Like most ATMs, if you request money from a bank to which you do not belong, you can usually expect to pay a small usage fee.

If decide not to carry cash around, you can purchase traveler's checks at many of these same locations and use them at restaurants, retail stores, hotels and airports with a valid form of identification. These have a distinct advantage over cash: if they are stolen, you can call the company that issued them and cancel them, thus ensuring that the thief does not use any of your money.
